Qudus Onikeku, Faculty | qonikeku@ufl.edu | Center for Arts Migration and Entrepreneurship | I am a PI or Co-PI on an AI research project | Ethics, Machine Learning, Speech or Vision Recognition, Movement | A cross departmental and international team of artists, scientists, and researchers at the University of Florida is collaborating on a deep tech solution to revolutionize the current systems around cultural appropriation and biased copyright law in dance. Currently, a dance move cannot be under copyright. Major corporations and megastars can steal the intellectual property of a dance move and create multi-billion dollar projects around it with no compensation going back to the original inventors, the majority of whom are people of color living outside the United States. ATUNDA is a social application allowing artists to upload and share their latest moves and timestamp them. Currently, the team is harvesting dance moves and engaging in deep learning solutions, to teach AI to detect and timestamp dance moves. In much the way the app Shazam led to first being able to recognize music that was playing in the environment and then similar software became used for recognizing misuse of copyrighted material, the concept and protocols developed through this research could have a parallel impact on the use of dance. The database and underlying software could be used to recognize unauthorized use and publication of dance moves in social media applications such as Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, and YouTube. Dancers and choreographers, who up until this innovation have had a difficult time monetizing and protecting their content creations, will now have a technological tool to aid them. We grew up in a world where it was believed that to do things properly was to do them efficiently economically and politically, a lot of countries liberalized their societies mostly because they were convinced about the efficiency argument, then of the deep moral argument. I am particularly interested in the possibility of undoing the increasing inequalities embedded in the development of AI technologies. Where some countries lead, appropriate, and dominate, while other parts of the world have absolutely no stakes nor a real chance in joining the current AI race, it's obvious that they are already out, so what happens to them in 2050? When we think about the potential disruption to the job market and the economy that will be caused by AI and automation, it goes without saying that there will be lots of opportunities in the future, but will it be evenly distributed? One of the potentials of the AI revolution could be a concentration of immense wealth in some professions and in parts of the world, and a complete bankruptcy in some others. If we don’t find ways of creating a global safety net now, to protect all humans against the shocks of AI, and enabling the historically left out to use the opportunities that AI brings, then we will create the most unequal economic situation that ever existed, it will be much worse than what happened in the industrial revolution when western countries used both the human and natural resources from the global south to industrialize and most countries didn’t, and the few industrial powers went on to conquer, dominate and exploit the others, so how do we create enough global partnership, so that the enormous benefits of the AI revolution don’t go only to the West or to Asia, while the rest of the world is left behind.
It's more than 200 years, and we are yet to close the inequality gap that the industrial revolution created, and now the AI revolution seems to be further widening this gap in a much more significant way, because AI is likely to be dominated by a small number of countries with technological affluence, and most countries that have the ability to invest in the future of new technology, seem to be doing so simply because it will give their local corporations or institutions an advantage in the future, to be the ones exporting services around the world. The other issue is the question of values, who is building these technologies and through what cultural, moral and philosophical lens? It is obvious that the kinds of policy or societal models we advance will be the imperatives for the kinds of innovations we will get, due to the simple fact that there are greater incentives for such manner of advancing within our societal model. |

As the Director of the Center, my research team, in collaboration with many UFCD Faculty and external collaborators, has been focusing on the research development of technologies to assist and improve restorative dental treatments and facilitate education in Restorative Dental Sciences. Our AI initiatives are divided into three main areas: Research, Education and Service/Creative Works. | Currently, the INBDE (Integrated National Board Dental Exam, required to get a dental license) uses patient box-questions that bring a hypothetical clinical case scenario, and the candidates have to answer questions that mix content from different dental specialties (i.e., Oral Surgery with Pathology and Restorative Dentistry). Our college has been using patient-box questions in many courses, and the students report that integrated knowledge is much easier to translate to clinical practice. Despite the success of the patient-box approach, these questions are all written essays or multiple-choice. Still, the DMD students lack training on the verbalization of the knowledge to clinical care. Oral examinations using augmented reality (AR) could train the DMD students to verbalize their knowledge for better clinical communication with the patients, faculty, and colleagues.
