1. TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE VERBS

The verbs can also be classified by whether or not they take an object. For the most part definite conjugation is used for transitive verbs and indefinite conjugation is used for intransitive verbs.

If this action passes on to a noun following, the verb is called transitive; főz [cook], tanul [study], beszél [speak]

If the action does not pass over to another noun but remains in the acting subject itself, the verb is called intransitive: jön [come], megy [go]

2. JÖN-MEGY-JÁR

These verbs express “moving” from one place to another. They only have indefinite conjugation. “jön” and “megy” have irregular conjugations, but “jár” is conjugated as a regular verb.

jön: valahonnan (come/ is coming from somewhere); the noun after the verb always gets -ból, ből, ról, ről, tól, től ending.

megy: valahova (go/ is going to somewhere); the noun after the verb always gets -ba, be, on en, ön, hoz, hez ending.

jár: express coming and going somewhere frequently; the noun after the verb always gets -ba, be, on en, ön, hoz, hez ending.

3. PREFIX VERBS – DIRECTIONS

Verbal prefixes modify the original meaning of the verb and often give it a figurative sense. The most frequently used prefixes are the prefixes that express directions:
