Preface
The digital textbook tentatively titled “Read & Learn Hungarian: Interactive Beginner’s Textbook” is a comprehensive resource that covers all four domains of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
The book follows a structured format that includes the following components:
- Pronunciation warm-up and practice: Each chapter begins with a pronunciation warm-up and practice section. The goal is to create an immersive environment where students can immediately start using the language. These exercises enhance their speaking skills and provide opportunities for listening practice.
- Reading text: The vocabulary used in the pronunciation exercises is selected from the main reading text. This ensures that students are already familiar with some of the vocabulary when they meet the reading material.
- Audio/Video – Listening: Initially, the text will be presented in an audio format. Later, it will be replaced with a karaoke-style video.
- Dictation: Once students have spent sufficient time engaging with the text through listening, speaking, and reading exercises, they will have opportunities to develop their writing skills through dictation and practice exercises that require written responses.
- Vocabulary: The book incorporates an interactive feature for vocabulary learning. By clicking on new and highlighted words or expressions, students can view the corresponding English translations, aiding their understanding of the Hungarian content.
- Practice Exercises: The “Practice Exercises” section enables students to test, apply and reinforce what they have learned throughout the chapter.
- Grammar Bites: As this interactive reader can be used in conjunction with traditional language textbooks and grammar books, I have not extensively covered essential Hungarian grammar explanations. Instead, I have included “Grammar Bites” to highlight unique grammar features that are often not covered in classroom settings due to limited classroom time.
- Culture Corner: The final segment of each chapter is called the “Culture Corner” which provides brief explanations about Hungarian traditions and characteristics giving students insight into the country’s culture.
