The TA as a Teacher

Teaching assistants play multifaceted roles in the classroom and beyond. At the University of Florida, teaching assistants take on a wide range of responsibilities as educators and mentors. They also engage with students from a wide variety of backgrounds, each bringing unique perspectives into the classroom. The following chapters explore important aspects of this role, from understanding student backgrounds and preparing for classes to implementing lessons, lecturing, and leading discussions, laboratories, or studio courses. Guidance is also provided on helping students during office hours, evaluating student performance and teaching effectiveness, and navigating ethical responsibilities, copyright, and fair use. Collectively, these topics help shape the teaching experience and support TAs in developing skills for effective instruction and meaningful student engagement.
